Bluffton's Old Town—The Past is Always Present

A rich and diverse history colors the contemporary yet still quiet streets of Bluffton’s Old Town. Originally a dwelling place for the Yemassee Native Americans, early 19th-century landowners chose the high bluffs and cool May River breezes as a summer respite and haven from the heat, isolation and infectious mosquitoes of the plantations.

Bluffton was the first official town in southern Beaufort County, incorporated in 1852. Today, stroll the shady streets and wander into an eclectic array of antique shops, art galleries and working studios. Or linger for awhile at one of the charming cafes and enjoy a homemade sandwich or the day’s freshest catch.
